Richard Proctor was an English astronomer best remembered for creating one of the earliest maps of Mars in 1867. His work, derived from observations by William Rutter Dawes, was instrumental in the early understanding of the planet's surface. Proctor also dedicated himself to accurately determining the length of a Martian day, with his estimates remaining remarkably close to modern values. His contributions to planetary astronomy are honored by a crater on Mars named in his memory.
