Hartmann von Aue stands as a preeminent epic poet of the so-called Middle High German Classicism around 1200, alongside Wolfram von Eschenbach and Gottfried von Straßburg. He, together with Heinrich von Veldeke, marked the beginning of the courtly romance tradition adopted from France.
