W. E. Hardenburg

Walter E. Hardenburg was an American engineer who became known for his exposé of the brutal practices of the Peruvian Amazon Company. Despite his initial intention to work on railway construction, Hardenburg found himself in the Putumayo region. There, he witnessed and subsequently documented the atrocities committed against the indigenous people. His testimony, published in 1909, brought to light the inhumane treatment and exploitation carried out by the company. Hardenburg's courage and his journalistic work shed light on these crimes, serving as a critical account of the dark side of colonial exploitation.
