Virginia Clay-Copton

    This author was a political hostess and activist in Alabama and Washington, D.C. Following the Civil War, she took on various responsibilities, serving as the wife of a U.S. Senator and being part of a group of young southerners boarding in the capital. In the immediate postwar period, she worked to secure her husband's freedom from imprisonment. Later in the late 19th century, she became an activist in the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
