Apuleius was a Latin-language prose writer from Numidia, living under the Roman Empire. He studied Platonic philosophy in Athens, traveled widely across the Mediterranean, and was initiated into various mystery cults. He gained renown through a famous trial where he defended himself against accusations of using magic to court a wealthy widow. In his defense, he delivered a witty and masterful oration before the proconsul and magistrates.
