Friedrich Naumann was a German liberal politician and Protestant parish pastor. Initially a follower of the conservative-clerical Christian Social Party, he later became interested in the social theories of Max Weber. In 1896, he co-founded the National-Social Association as a liberal activist force alongside the Social Democrats. Throughout his later life, Naumann worked towards an rapprochement of the German social democratic and liberal movements, though he faced significant opposition from conservatives. In 1919, he was among the founders of the social liberal German Democratic Party and was elected into the Weimar Germany Parliament. Naumann is often considered an advocate of German nationalism, notably due to his book "Mitteleuropa" (1915), which explored the geopolitics of a German-led Central Europe.
