A British chemist, he was a pioneer in the field of cellulose technology. In partnership with Edward John Bevan, he established an analytical and consulting chemistry firm in 1885. Their collaborative work in 1888 became a standard text on papermaking. They later patented the process for creating viscose, rayon, and cellophane in 1892, a transformative invention for industrial applications.
