Laughable loves is a collection of stories that first appeared in print in Prague before 1968, but then was banned. The seven stories are all concerned with love, or rather with the complex erotic games and strategems employed by women and especially men as they try to come to terms with needs ad impulses that can start a terrifying train of events. Sexual attraction is shown as a game that often turns sour, an experience that brings with it painful insisghts and releases uncertainty, panic, vanity and a constant need for reassurance.

Předkládaný svazek shromažďuje několik esejů o české literatuře vzniklých za posledních 40 let. Střídají se v něm stati o jezuitské próze 17. století a Komenském, o české avantgardě, vždy nazírané v kontextu ostatních evropských avantgard oněch let, o Holanově tvorbě zkoumané z neobvyklého hlediska tematického (dopisy, pohlednice, telegramy…), či o několika Hrabalových románech ze sedmdesátých let, až po angažovanější kritické příspěvky zaměřené na současné dění, jejichž cílem je objasnit jak tajemná léta v činnosti M. Kundery, tak neutěšený stav bohemistiky v Itálii a (v důsledku toho) i velmi nekvalitní literární překlady z češtiny. V knize se prolínají – tak jak by se podle autora mela pěstovat zdravá literární kritika – podrobnější rozbory s volnějšími divagacemi, dlouhodobé vyhlídky i detailní záběry, zapomenuté postavy (jako pražský Nemec Paul Adler a jeho krátký román Totiž) i přední osobnosti jako Komenský a jeho Labyrint světa, K. Teige nebo V. Nezval (a jeho půvabná Valerie a týden divů). Především však v knize mají neustále svrchovanou převahu rozkoš z textů (i těch třeba druhořadých a pozapomenutých), okouzlení básnickým slovem a ony pozemské vášně, jež tolik fascinovaly avantgardní generaci meziválečnou: koláž, film, tradice černého románu, manekýny, „rozmnožený“ obraz ženy, Fantômas…
