This two-volume collection of short works by Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was compiled after his death to give readers access to some of his lesser-known works. Volume 1 contains autobiographical letters from Swedenborg; additional material for his work True Christian Religion; essays about the New Church; and writings about charity, sacred scripture, and the Last Judgment.

In this volume, Swedish visionary Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) discusses marriage from a spiritual perspective -- the ways in which men and women relate to each other both in this world and in the afterlife, and how marriages in heaven can either grow into a state of bliss and unity or wither away as partner discover their incompatibilities and seek their true soulmates. Swedenborg includes his perspective on sexual relationships in this world, both in and out of wedlock, and how the choices that we make affect our spiritual development. Interwoven with the text are numerous examples of his experiences in heaven. This edition is a reprint of a 1915 translation by Samuel M. Warren, revised by Louis H. Tafel.

Emmanuel Swedenborg's guide to the afterlife, and the importance of the human connection to God, remains one of the most celebrated Enlightenment-era works on the subject. Originally published in Latin during the mid-18th century, Swedenborg's treatise contains rich allusions not merely to the realms of the afterlife, but also to the principles of Christianity. The nature of marriage, an argument against polygamy, and the concept of a spirit world, and how spiritual matters influence human will, are some of the notions raised by Swedenborg that render his thoughts enchanting. According to Swedenborg, the entirety of this text was inspired after he had received a divine revelation from God himself. This was simply the notion that God is the very essence of love in the universe, and that His divine force intends for every human being to go to heaven. He never descends into anger or hatred, and the traversal of every human spirit into heaven was His intention by the very act of Creation.

In his most popular and influential work, Swedenborg describes his journeys through the afterlife--the soul's experience of dying and then being resurrected in heaven, how each of us finds a community there in which to live, and how we can ultimately become angels. "Heaven and Hell "is a powerful affirmation that we are all born for heaven, regardless of background or religion, and that the choices we make in this world shape our destiny in the next.

True Christian Religion was the last work published by Swedish visionary Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). In it, he summarizes his theological thought and gives his vision for how the Christian church and -- and should -- function in the coming age.In the second volume, Swedenborg discusses the spiritual necessity of freedom of choice; repentance and how it leads to reformation and ultimately spiritual rebirth; the relationship between faith and Christ as redeemer; and sacraments such as baptism and the Holy Supper (Communion). He concludes with a description of the coming "New Church" which will herald a new age of spiritual understanding for humankind.This edition is a reprint of a 1914 translation by John C. Ager.
