Nach der Rückkehr mit seiner Mutter nach Wien beschreibt der Autor seine Volksschulzeit im Wiener Arbeiterbezirk Favoriten, dem Wohnbezirk seines nichtjüdischen Großvaters. Nationalsozialistische Lehrer werden ebenso geschildert wie Erlebnisse im Salzkammergut, wo sich die Familie Goebbels in der arisierten Roth-Villa einquartierte. Der jüdische Vater des Autors flüchtete nach England. Seine Scheinscheidung und Wiederverheiratung wie eine Beschreibung seiner Internierung und das Schicksal einiger Familienmitglieder sind weitere Themen. Das Buch endet mit Reflexionen zur Sprache im Exil.
