Denn die späteren Ausgaben folgen alle der von Jean Paul überarbeiteten Fassung der zweiten Auflage von 1822. Die Absicht der vorliegenden Ausgabe ist es, den Text der Erstausgabe wieder zugänglich zu machen, zumal die Exemplare von 1793 immer schwieriger greifbar werden und auch in den Auktions- und Antiquariatskatalogen immer seltener auftauchen. Das weitaus größere Anliegen dieser Edition ist jedoch das Bemühen, den Text selbst, der - wie Jean Pauls Prosa überhaupt - als schwierig zu lesen gilt, dem Verständnis des heutigen Lesers näher zu bringen.
