Susanna Marino, una studentessa squattrinata laureata in cinema, viene incaricata da un misterioso collezionista torinese di ritrovare una preziosa pellicola degli anni Venti, scomparsa durante l’occupazione nazista. Il regista è l’ungherese Károly Lajthay, il titolo Drakula halála. Si dice infatti che sia questo, e non il Nosferatu di Murnau, il primo film in cui compare il personaggio di Dracula di Bram Stoker; nessuno però è mai riuscito a trovarlo, o, se l’ha fatto, non l’ha potuto raccontare. La pellicola pare infatti maledetta, e una mano misteriosa uccide chiunque tenti di venirne in possesso. Una volta giunta a Budapest, Susanna dovrà muoversi in una città dalle atmosfere espressioniste, tra tetti acuminati e oscuri sotterranei, in mezzo a cacciatori di pellicole privi di scrupoli, poliziotti sospettosi e ambigui musicisti noise, lungo una pista di sangue che affonda le radici in un tragico passato.
