With this speech, the Croatian author Boris Buden opened the Balkan Case Challenge 2010 held in Vienna from 5 to 10 July 2010. This annual competition, supported by ERSTE Foundation, aims at opening up opportunities and new perspectives for excellent students from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia through strengthening links between higher education and employment and by the provision of concrete job opportunities.

Übersetzung wird hier nicht nur als Medium der Verwirklichung einer multilingualen Demokratie verstanden. Sie legt vielmehr ein Kontinuum sozialer Verwandlungen frei, das auf seine Artikulation wartet. Wie also drückt sich der politische Wirkraum von Übersetzung aus und wie kann er der derzeitigen »Sprachlosigkeit« Europas Einhalt gebieten? Dwadzieścia lat po upadku komunizmu tęsknota za przeszłością zastępuje nam wiarę w przyszłość, kulturowa tożsamość wypiera historyczną pamięć, a społeczeństwo – przestaje istnieć. Manipulujemy historią, z której nic nie rozumiemy, i wierzymy, że żyjemy w najlepszym z możliwych światów. Kościół staje się przedsiębiorstwem, rockowi anarchiści – religijnymi fanatykami, a bohaterscy dysydenci zblazowanymi cynikami. Czy demokratyczny potencjał rewolucji roku 1989 został zmarnowany? Czy o to chodziło zrewoltowanym narodom Europy Wschodniej – o nadrobienie zaległości wobec Zachodu i prawo pobierania u niego nauk? Czym jest postkomunizm? Przedsionkiem kapitalizmu i demokracji dla dawnych ofiar sowietyzmu? A może kondycją całego świata, który po upadku bloku wschodniego zapomniał nie tylko, czym był komunizm, ale także solidarność, konflikt społeczny, klasa i społeczeństwo? The Gastarbeiter, a symbol of migrant workers in late industrial modernity, was created to address temporary gaps in Western European capitalism while also reflecting its early economic and political fractures. Emerging from the disparities between the "developed" North and the "underdeveloped" South, this figure occupied a regulated space within European democracies. Today, the Gastarbeiter represents an avant-garde presence at the intersection of capitalism and socialism. This early messenger of global transformation underscores not only the collapse of socialism but also the rise of global neoliberal capitalism, revealing the inherent contradictions that have led to a significant crisis in recent years. This crisis is dramatically expressed in the current challenges faced by refugees and migrants. The Gastarbeiter's legacy is central to understanding today's so-called "crisis," necessitating an exploration of its hidden genealogy across ideological divides and political interests. By reconnecting our present with the past, we can better comprehend the current situation and envision a transformed future.

Sechs erfundene Konzept-Charaktere nehmen an einem fiktiven Symposium teil. Was sie verbindet, ist zweierlei: ein weit über das Sprachliche hinausgehende Interesse an Übersetzung und ein Problem – die verlorengegangene europäische Idee. Einige von ihnen glauben, diese in der Übersetzung wiederzufinden. Die anderen bezweifeln dies: Ausgerechnet in der Übersetzung stoße die Idee der europäischen Integration an ihre immanenten Grenzen.
