Josef Čapek Series
March 23, 1887 – April 1, 1945
Josef Čapek was a distinctive figure in the Czech artistic scene, whose work extended beyond painting and poetry into literature. Influenced by Cubism, he imbued his visual works with a unique, playful, and at times primitive character. In artistic collaboration with his brother Karel, he contributed to the creation of numerous plays and short stories. He is also the author of a now-classic Czech children's book. Čapek is also known as the creator of the word 'robot,' which his brother Karel later popularized in literature. His life was marked by persecution under the Nazi regime, which led him to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where he died. Even during this period, however, he continued to create and left us a collection of poems.
