Der Illustrator Charley Case, ein belgischer Künstler und Weltenbummler, hat bereits eines von Ben Jellouns Kinderbüchern illustriert. Dr. Heiner Geißler, geboren am 3. März 1930, war Mitglied des Jesuitenordens und studierte Philosophie in München sowie Rechtswissenschaften in Tübingen. Er hatte verschiedene politische Ämter inne, darunter Richter und Minister für Jugend, Familie und Gesundheit. Geißler setzte zahlreiche sozialpolitische Neuerungen um, wie die Einführung von Sozialstationen und das Erziehungsgeld. Als Generalsekretär der CDU modernisierte er die Partei. Zu seinen bekanntesten Buchveröffentlichungen zählen Werke über soziale Fragen, Nationalismus und die politische Botschaft des Evangeliums. Dieses Buch ist eine Provokation, und doch handelt es von etwas erschreckend Alltäglichem. Als bei Tahar Ben Jelloun Prostatakrebs diagnostiziert wurde, beschloss er, darüber zu schreiben. Ob ihm bewusst war, dass er damit an eines der letzten Tabus rührte? Anders als bei den „weiblichen“ Krebsarten, die schon lange autobiografisch-literarisch verarbeitet werden, gab es noch keinen Schriftsteller von Rang, der über seine persönliche „Entmännlichung“ berichtet hätte. Die Angst vor der Bloßstellung war groß genug, dass auch Ben Jelloun sich zunächst des alten Kniffs bediente, die Geschichte eines „Freundes“ zu erzählen. Nur so schaffte er es, die Ängste und Schrecken, die mit diesem Krebs und seiner Behandlung verbunden sind, mit der nötigen Distanz zu schildern. Schonungslos und dabei doch lyrisch, intim und zugleich überpersonell, berichtet Ben Jelloun von Demütigungen, Entscheidungen und Abschieden. Und dabei ist ihm noch etwas ganz anderes gelungen – nämlich eine Eloge an das Leben und die Liebe.
