V roce 1908 Edith Durhamová takřka samotná (pouze se svým věrným albánským průvodcem) procházela křížem krážem skrze izolované, málo zmapované a v dané době často démonizované území severoalbánských horských kmenů. To ve své době představovalo jedno z posledních celistvých osídlení v Evropě, kde stále vládlo nepsané zvykové právo.
