In 2013, a heretofore undescribed Parisian book of hours surfaced: it is closely connected with the Valois court of France and the Limbourg brothers from Nijmegen who worked first for the Philip the Bold of Burgundy and then illuminated the Belles Heures in New York and the Très Riches Heures in Chantilly for Jean de Berry and may have been the best Western painters working in the first two decades of the 15th century. The unfinished manuscript contains thirty pages with images left in the state of drawings. In part, they are so splendidly executed as if they were intended to remain uncoloured. As masterpieces of the International Gothic around 1400 they shed light on the genius of drawing in a time of the greatest change in art between the Middle Ages and the first attempts toward the Renaissance. They are early witnesses of the fascination Northern artists had with the new discovery of nature in Italian art in the generation just before 1400, and they belong to the very best works which paved the way to the revolutionary development of the Netherlandish primitives from the 1420s onwards who were to astound the Western world with a new liveliness of figures in panoramas of landscape and architecture. 0

Die Faksimile-Edition des Flämischen Stundenbuchs der Maria von Medici, aufbewahrt in der Bodleian Library in Oxford, erscheint in einer limitierten Auflage von 680 handnumerierten Exemplaren. Mit drei gemäldeartigen Vollbildern und 42 ganzseitigen Miniaturen ist das Stundenbuch prächtig ausgestattet. Zarte Streublumenbordüren auf Goldgrund sowie historisierte Bordüren im flämischen oder italienisierenden Stil zieren jede Textseite. Mehrzeilige Initialen auf goldgehöhtem farbigen Grund leiten die Andachtstexte ein. Die Edition gibt alle 176 Blatt im Format von ca. 20,4 × 13,7 cm originalgetreu wieder. Der Faksimileband ist in bordeauxrotem Samt eingebunden und mit aufwendiger Stickerei aus Silber- und farbigen Seidenfäden verziert, was dem Einband des 16. Jahrhunderts entspricht. Faksimile und Kommentarband werden in einem Acrylglas-Schuber geliefert, der sowohl Schutz vor Staub bietet als auch dekorativ wirkt. Der Kommentarband von Eberhard König, Professor für Kunstgeschichte, beleuchtet die Blütezeit der flämischen Buchmalerei und ordnet das Stundenbuch dem Werk des Meisters der Davidszenen zu. Eine detaillierte Miniaturenbeschreibung enthüllt den phantasievollen Reichtum der Details. Peter J. Kidd, ein Londoner Handschriftenforscher, analysiert den kodikologischen Aufbau der Handschrift und rekonstruiert die spannende Besitzergeschichte über die Jahrhunderte.
