Max Shachtman

A significant figure in the American Trotskyist movement from the 1930s, this author led a minority faction of the Socialist Workers Party. This group broke with Trotsky over their analysis of Russia, forming the Workers Party in 1940, which later became the Independent Socialist League. The ISL eventually merged with the Socialist Party in the late 1950s. Their editorial contributions appeared in numerous publications, including The Young Worker, Labor Defender, The Militant, The New International, and Labor Action.
