"Portfolio design is central to making the transition from student to working professional. Hiring managers and recruiters spend as much time reviewing portfolios as they do interviewing applicants for positions. However, most curricula struggle to fully prepare students for the challenge of creating a portfolio and finding their first professional job, leaving students unsure how to organize and present their work. And most available resources are aimed at professionals rather than an inexperienced design student. Instead, this book offers easy-to-understand and constructive guidance that will be useful to a young designer with a project history that consists only of academic and internship work. Design Portfolios: A Recruiter's View provides a student-friendly guide, written from the perspective of a designer and design industry recruiter to what recruiters look for as they review a design portfolio. It shows students how to create a professional-quality portfolio that will get them to that all- important next step in the recruiting process--the interview. Using a unique plan of action, "The Four S's", the book presents an organizational mindset focused on the added value of telling your Story, revealing your Style, proclaiming your Substance, and Sharing your uniqueness effectively. In today's competitive market, a winning portfolio is much more than a simple accounting of digital skills and volumes of high-resolution graphics. This book shows students what recruiters really value and how to ensure their portfolios make the right impression"-- Provided by publisher

On still nights, the thrum of the turbines echoed down the valley and melded with the sound of the ocean until you couldn’t tell them apart.Hesse lives a small coastal town, where a coalmine and power station are a part of the scenery, and a part of the ever-growing problem of climate change. His mum is a member of a local environmental group campaigning to close the mine and shut down the power station. It’s a no-brainer, of course, but Hesse is more interested in surfing—and in Fenna, the new exchange student from the Netherlands. But when someone seems to be trying to derail the campaign, and his friends’ families face losing their jobs, Hesse begins to realise that things are complex.Even though he’s reluctant to step into the spotlight, with Fenna’s encouragement he decides it’s time to make a stand. Because some things are too important to leave to everyone else. And even one small, nervous voice can make a difference. When Hesse agrees to speak at a protest meeting he has no idea of the storm he is about to unleash. If Not Us is Mark Smith’s first standalone YA novel following his hugely successful Winter trilogy. The first ever publication of Mark E. Smith's supernatural film treatment, co-authored with Graham Duff. In 2015 Mark E. Smith of The Fall and screenwriter Graham Duff co-wrote the script for a horror feature film called The Otherwise. The story involved The Fall recording an EP in an isolated recording studio on Pendle Hill. The Lancashire landscape is not only at the mercy of a satanic biker gang, it's also haunted by a gaggle of soldiers who have slipped through time from the Jacobite Rebellion. However, every film production company who saw the script said it was 'too weird' to ever be made. The Otherwise is weird. Yet it's also witty, shocking and genuinely scary. Now the screenplay is published for the first time, alongside photographs, drawings and handwritten notes. The volume also contains previously unpublished transcripts of conversations between Smith and Duff, where they discuss creativity, dreams, musical loves (from Can to acid house) and favourite films (from Britannia Hospital to White Heat). Smith also talks candidly about his youth and mortality, in exchanges that are both touching and extremely funny.
