Am 13. Juni 1872 stach der Dreimaster “Admiral Tegethoff” in See. An Bord: eine vierundzwanzigköpfige Mannschaft unter dem Kommando von Julius Payer und Karl Weyprecht. Das Ziel: die Durchquerung des Polarmeeres bis zum Pazifischen Ozean. Die abenteuerliche Forschungsreise sollte als “Die österreichisch-ungarische Nordpolexpedition” in die Geschichte eingehen. Doch kaum war man aufgebrochen, drohte das Unternehmen zu scheitern. Auf 76 Grad 22 Minuten nördlicher Breite wurde das Schiff für immer im Eis eingeschlossen und driftete gen Norden. Für die Besatzung begann eine lange Zeit unsäglicher Mühe und ein Kampf ums tägliche Überleben. In dieser Zeit der Gefangenschaft im Eis beschlossen Payer und Weyprecht, das Land zu erforschen, das sich vor ihren Augen auftat, als sich der Nebel lichtete. Sie entdeckten die nördlichste Inselgruppe Eurasiens im Nordpolarmeer und nannten sie Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Land.
