Benjamin Péret was a French poet, a Parisian Dadaist, and a central member of the French Surrealist movement. His work was characterized by an avid use of Surrealist automatism, creating imagery that defied logical reasoning and tapped into the subconscious. Péret was known for his ability to weave together unexpected associations and liberate metaphors, provoking readers to reconsider their perception of reality. His distinctive voice contributed significantly to the evolution of avant-garde literature.
This is the first complete English translation of Benjamin Peret's 1928 work, Le Grand Jeu (The Big Game). Peret, a founding figure of Surrealism alongside Andre Breton and Louis Aragon, created this enduring piece, which remains popular in France even after 80 years.
«Raréfiée et d'une modestie d'avoine folle, l'œuvre poétique de Péret, qui est considérable, n'a jamais attiré l'immense public d'un Eluard et d'un Prévert, auxquels il est à plus d'un titre supérieur. Péret, qui n'attribuait aucun prix à ce qu'il écrivait, était pourtant un homme épris de toutes les exigences du cœur et de la morale, l'exégète fervent de l'amour sublime, le traqueur tenace et admiratif des contes et rites lointains, le polémiste intransigeant des luttes politiques et syndicales. Dans ses essais, préfaces et pamphlets, c'était un esprit acéré et délicat, lucide et rigoureux, un analyste fin et inlassable, mais cette passion et cette dévotion, il les consacrait à autrui. Dès que sa poésie à lui était en cause, il n'était plus conscient des lois physiques ou intellectuelles de l'écriture, il devenait vacant et disponible, totalement étranger à tout ce qui avoisine une vanité, ou un amour-propre d'auteur. Son Je était si magnifiquement un autre qu'à l'adresse : Péret, poète, il eût sans doute répondu antimilitairement par : inconnu au bataillon.»
