Doch ein Aspekt, eine Dimension seines Lebens und Wirkens ist bislang beinahe unbeachtet geblieben: sein einzigartig freundschaftliches Verhältnis zu vielen jüdischen Zeitgenossen, zum Judentum überhaupt – und insbesondere sein Engagement um eine wahrhaftige Erinnerungskultur, für eine »Wiedergutmachung« der Verbrechen am jüdischen Volk und die Aussöhnung mit Israel.
