      Michael Schmid - Quotation marks

The chicken has long been a model organism for genetic and developmental studies. It is now beginning to take its place as a model genome, opening up the fields of phylogenetics and comparative genomics like never before. This report comes at a time of huge technological advances (particularly in sequencing methodologies) and summarizes the current efforts to complete the gaps in the genome. It describes the progress that has been made in genomic annotation, particularly with respect to noncoding RNAs and genetic variants. Reviews of comparative genomics, avian evolution and sex determination are included as well as transcriptomic case studies and developments in epigenetic studies. The Third Report on Chicken Genes and Chromosomes also features the National Avian Research Facility and how it has developed into a resource for the study of avian biology, genetics, infection and disease. In this volume researchers interested in genetics, genomics and evolution will find detailed information that has not been available until now.

The book offers a critical analysis of Arab/Islamic anti-American sentiment in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the context of the Gulf War and the subsequent presence of US troops. It investigates whether reactions to American military presence stem from genuine anti-Americanism or reflect other underlying issues. Utilizing a range of Arabic and American sources, including perspectives from Saudi opposition leaders, the study explores dominant themes in the discourse surrounding American soldiers in the region, providing a nuanced understanding of the sentiments involved.

The thesis explores the intersection of culture and geography within American Studies, focusing on how cultural practices and geographical contexts influence each other. Conducted at the Free University of Berlin, it presents an analytical framework for understanding American cultural dynamics through applied geographic principles. The research contributes to the academic discourse by examining specific case studies, ultimately highlighting the significance of spatial awareness in cultural analysis.

Providing a wealth of current and archival information This monograph is an exhaustive analysis of the biology of hemiphractid frogs, presenting results obtained over a 43-year period on 16 expeditions to Central and South America, Trinidad and Tobago and from several laboratories (Canada, Ecuador, Germany, and USA). The focus of this study is on chromosomes, but it also includes very detailed chapters on phylogeny, classification, biogeography, and especially on reproduction, oogenesis, spermatogenesis, and embryogenesis. Further notable sections are devoted to developmental biology, life history and population declines in hemiphractids. The major proportion of this book describes the karyotypes of 397 individuals representing 23 hemiphractid species. All karyotypes are illustrated by superb photographs selected from many hundreds taken. Modern techniques of preparation including special staining, molecular probes, in situ hybridization, and genome size measurements were used to generate these data which are also interpreted in context with the cytogenetic data published for other amphibian taxa or vertebrates. Providing a wealth of current and archival information on hemiphractid biology and cytogenetics, this monograph is recommended for specialists in the fields of zoology, herpetology, embryology and cytogenetics, as well as for students with an interest in vertebrate cytogenetics.

      The chromosomes of terraranan frogs

      • 20 hours of reading

This comprehensive cytogenetic study spans 36 years and over 70 expeditions to the Neotropics, examining the karyotypes and genomes of 227 recognized species and 2,548 individual specimens of Terrarana. Utilizing various staining techniques, molecular probe in situ hybridization, and genome size measurements, the research incorporates all previously published cytogenetic data on Terrarana. Karyotype characters were mapped onto a molecular phylogeny derived from analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear genes, enabling the reconstruction of karyophylogenies and calculation of chromosomal mutation rates. Findings are contextualized with existing cytogenetic data from other amphibians and vertebrates. The study elucidates the general properties of eukaryote chromosomes, the rules governing chromosome repatterning, and principles of chromosome evolution. An extensive 'Material and Methods' section serves as a guide for those interested in amphibian chromosome research. This monograph offers detailed information on terraranan karyotypes and genomes, catering to specialists in amphibian or vertebrate cytogenetics, while also providing valuable insights for herpetologists studying neotropical amphibian evolution and students interested in vertebrate cytogenetics.

The paper explores the complex and often ambiguous world of espionage within international relations, emphasizing its significant yet unclear impact on historical events and contemporary issues. It highlights the inherent secrecy of intelligence operations and the ongoing debate among historians regarding the role and influence of intelligence agencies on policymaking. The discussion is contextualized by recent controversies, particularly the intelligence community's involvement in the lead-up to the Iraq war, illustrating the enduring relevance of these questions in today's political landscape.

The analysis contrasts two approaches to market research: focusing on consumer behavior versus understanding the environmental context in which consumers operate. Citing Eric J. Arnold, the authors of "Elusive Consumption" advocate for studying the "water" rather than just the "fish," emphasizing that consumer interactions with market forces are best evaluated through their surroundings. While some critics argue for a more behavior-centric approach, the book delves into defining the consumer's environment and its impact on consumption patterns, based on extensive research.

The paper explores the evolution of public opinion polling in America, highlighting its significance in understanding the public's sentiment towards government policies, especially in foreign affairs and military operations. It discusses the historical challenges faced in gauging public mood due to technological limitations and the emergence of scientific polling with the establishment of the Gallup poll in 1935. The paper contrasts the accuracy of Gallup's predictions during the 1936 presidential election with those of the Literary Digest, emphasizing the importance of representative sampling in polling methods.

Focusing on the exploration of memory processing and trauma, this seminar paper discusses the contributions of Jean Martin Charcot and Pierre Janet, as presented in Bessel Van der Kolk and Onno Van der Hart's work, The Intrusive Past. It highlights how traumatic memories impact consciousness and collective imagery, delving into the cultural implications of these psychological insights. The paper, graded highly at the Free University of Berlin, reflects on the interplay between trauma and cultural memory within American studies.
