    • Dej románu Pod jarmom sa odohráva v mestečku Biela Čerkva v čase tzv. aprílového povstania roku 1876. V postavách Ogňanova, Sokolova, Kandova a ďalších autor vykreslil typy revolucionárov-inteligentov, ktorí posvätili svoje životy ideálu národného oslobodenia a boli hlavnou silou protitureckéhopovstania. Okrem nich v románe vystupujú krásne postavy ľudových hrdinov - Borimečka, Ovčarov, Cankov, učiteľka Rada a mnohí iní - ktoré predstavujú to nezničiteľné jadro bulharského národa, čo pretrvalo veky a nikdy nedalo zahynúť myšlienkam slobody a národnej nezávisloti.
