Roald Hoffmann

Roald Hoffmann is a theoretical chemist whose work centers on understanding the fundamental principles of chemical reactions. He developed computational tools and methods, notably the extended Hückel method, which illuminated the electronic structure of molecules. Alongside Robert Burns Woodward, he formulated groundbreaking rules for elucidating reaction mechanisms, known as the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. His research significantly advanced theoretical chemistry by providing deeper insights into the intricate processes of chemical transformations.

In a unique collaboration, Nobel laureate Roald Hoffmann and artist Vivian Torrence explore the creative and humanistic aspects of chemistry. Through thirty field-color painted collages accompanied by essays, personal reflections, and poetry, they illuminate the often inaccessible world of chemistry, its historical roots, and its modern significance. Hoffmann emphasizes how science intersects with daily life, highlighting the social, cultural, literary, and psychological contexts of chemistry. Torrence's surreal images reflect the visual nature and intellectual depth of the field, revealing how chemists think and pose their inquiries. The work presents chemical discoveries and personalities in a humanistic light, drawing intriguing parallels such as comparing the early drafts of the periodic table to revisions of a William Blake poem, exploring the chemical foundations of Chinese folk medicine, and likening molecules to musical instruments. It also meditates on the distinction between scientific discovery and artistic creation. This celebration of molecular science's place in world culture is both surprising and compelling, offering insights that resonate with the general public, scientists, and artists alike. The combination of Torrence's provocative visuals and Hoffmann's insights creates an illuminating collage of a central science.
