In seinem Exil, für das er sich nach der Flucht 1823 in die USA und fast zwei Jahrzehnten ruhelosen Reisens zwischen Europa und Amerika entscheidet, entstehen jene Romane, die seine literargeschichtliche Bedeutung ausmachen. Thema und Inhalt des Sammelbandes orientieren sich an diesen biographischen und werkgeschichtlichen Umständen. Siebzehn Wissenschaftler aus Deutschland, Japan, Österreich, der Schweiz, Slowenien und den USA setzen sich mit Themen der Biographie, des Schweizbildes und der Mehrsprachigkeit in den Romanen, mit text- wie rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Fragen auseinander. Mehrere werkvergleichende Beiträge gehen den Bezügen zwischen Sealsfields Texten und denen von Jeremias Gotthelf, Alfred Hartmann und Franz E.
