Franz Mehring

    February 27, 1846 – January 29, 1919

Initially a liberal journalist, this author evolved into a significant communist theorist after deeply engaging with the writings of Karl Marx. Moving from fervent anti-communism to a staunch advocate for the cause, his intellectual journey placed him among the forefront of revolutionary thought. He became closely associated with Rosa Luxemburg and, despite his advanced age during the First World War, was a prominent voice in the opposition to the conflict. As a founding member of the German Communist Party, his life concluded tragically shortly after the loss of his comrades.

The book explores the life of Karl Marx, detailing his early experiences in Brussels where he faced restrictions on political expression. It highlights his decision to resign from the Prussian state and his refusal to accept citizenship from other nations, despite offers from the French provisional government. The narrative draws parallels between Marx and Heinrich Heine, emphasizing their shared struggles as exiles.
