      China's New Architecture

      Returning to the Context

      • 144 pages
      • 6 hours of reading

In recent years, a refreshingly unconventional architectural scene - outside the mainstream - has established itself in China. Its representatives, many of whom were trained in the West, are known for their sensitive handling of space, light, and material, and by their engagement with context and their own tradition. Since Wang Shu, one of the most important representatives of the profession, won the Pritzker Prize, international professionals have become more aware of China's new architecture. Twenty fascinating examples of different building typologies - many with social relevance - as well as an introductory essay illustrate current building activities and provide an insight into the cultural and architectonic influences.

A comprehensive reference work on vernacular architecture Traditional building methods – such as those used in pueblos, timbered houses, or the Japanese minka – exist in fascinating diversity and create the face of a region. However, as a result of globalization they have been marginalized in many places. In the fastest developing countries in particular, a wealth of experience that goes back hundreds of years is being irretrievably lost, even though valuable insights can be gained for modern building. Using the examples of selected domestic buildings from all continents, 30 international experts demonstrate why we can still learn from vernacular architecture; they analyze the cultural context and the adaptation to topographic/climactic conditions, and focus on the local materials used as well as on the construction, the building process, and the necessary maintenance. A comprehensive reference work covering traditional building methods Numerous examples of vernacular domestic architecture from all five continents More than 1000 impressive color photographs and detailed drawings Also available in German

Industrialisation, mechanisation and expansion have wrought profound changes on European cities and the surrounding landscapes in the last century. As regards the positive social and healthy development of inhabitants, landscape planning has become an integral part of all urban planning. Sometimes it is possible to truly merge nature and architecture. “best of DETAIL Landscapes” presents highlights of the past few years from DETAIL: buildings that disappear into their surroundings, lush meadows revealed as roofscapes only after closer inspection, paths and walkways through jungle-like gardens. Architecture and cities can no longer be counterpoints to nature and the landscape. Rather they should strive to create stunning symbioses.

      Building across worlds

Over the past 50 years, the architectural office von Gerkan, Marg und Partner has realised 400 projects worldwide – from single-family homes to cultural edifices and office buildings, from transport facilities to master plans. Many of the buildings were constructed throughout Asia – yet how to build in the cultural environment and on the proper scale in China and Vietnam, for example? What sort of knowledge can be transferred from construction work in Europe – and how much do construction projects, in their sociologically and culturally familiar contexts, benefit from the experienced gained there? Various principles, conditions and times determine the context in which gmp operates. The extract included herein from the gmp portfolio draws parallels between current domestic and international projects, while supplemental references to earlier buildings offer a look back at the office's development. Here, the focus is primarily on the question of how knowledge and experience engage in a dialogue with design work based on rationality.

The museum as a building type and architectural space bear a complex relationship to each other. Architecture competes with the exhibited objects on the one hand and gives way to them on the other, enabling the museum to develop as regards content. This manual guide has its point of departure between both poles and targets both designers and users. The aim of the publication is to facilitate communication in the planning process of a museum, whether this is during the conceptual stage, the competition, or the design and construction phase. In addition to an introduction on the architectural history of the museum, the authors examine the key planning parameters involved in the conception and design of a contemporary museum. Buildings and projects provide inspiration for individual design work.

This volume presents the theoretical background underpinning SOM's structural group and addresses the question of 'How high can you go?', as well as issues of efficiency and economy. On the basis of a variety of projects, from the James Turrel Skyspace to Burj Khalifa, it considers how to find new structural solutions, as well as how materials can be used innovatively to create 'next-generation' buildings.

      Asian flavours

Ceremonies, rituals und traditions – as well as the fascinating combinations of flavours and unusual ingredients, the culinary customs of Asian countries also arouse great interest in Western cultures. But how are spaces for Asian eating and cooking traditions and processes designed? What kind of surroundings are these kinds of food and drinks consumed in? This book presents the projects of Asian and European architects on both continents, ranging from tea houses and sake bars through to entire restaurants. How are architects adapting and interpreting this cuisine in 'our' latitudes? How do they respond to the conditions and cultures in these spaces without simply simulating an 'Asian decor'? Enhanced with information about individual dishes and essays on various Asian cuisines and culinary cultures, the book is also a travel guide to Europe’s many special Asiatic spaces.
