Klinik und Wirkmechanismen
Der Zusammenhang zwischen Schlaf und Stimmung sowie Antrieb ist bereits seit langem bekannt und seit etwa 30 Jahren auch Gegenstand von wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen. Es zeigte sich, daß der therapeutische Schlafentzug, der von einigen Autoren auch als Wachtherapie bezeichnet wird, mit günstigen antidepressiven Effekten einhergeht, insbesondere wenn er wiederholte Anwendung findet. Obwohl der therapeutische Schlafentzug bereits breite klinische Anwendung findet, ist der Wirkmechanismus noch nicht eindeutig geklärt. Verschiedene Überlegungen, das zirkadiane System, die Neurotransmitter und die mit diesen verbundenen hormonellen Parameter betreffend, wurden als Erklärungshypothese herangezogen.
