The role of Non-Governmental Organizations in Africa has been widely discussed. Malawi like other African countries underwent a transition towards pluralism and democratization. The NGOs play a vital part in this process, especially since state bureaucracies and market mechanisms do not provide the expected development. But are NGOs really able to make up for the shortcomings of official institutions, considering the problems that still lie ahead?
