Innovation in Science and Organizational Renewal
    • 2016

This book looks at the types of new research organizations that drive scientific innovation and how ground-breaking science transforms research fields and their organization. Based on historical case studies and comparative empirical data, the book presents new and thought-provoking evidence that improves our knowledge and understanding about how new research fields are formed and how research organizations adapt to breakthroughs in science. While the book is firmly based in science history, it discusses more general sociological and policy propositions regarding scientific innovations and organizational change. The volume brings together leading scholars both from the United States and Europe.

South America – capturing the experienceA visually stunning tour of the continent by one of Germany's leading travel photographers. Beautifully bound and presented with 400 picturesEver since his childhood, travel photographer Thomas Heinze's ambition was to visit South America. Nowhere else on the planet is quite as exotic or undiscovered. The very names of Amazonia, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Galapagos, Atacama, Andes and Machu Picchu are irresistible lures. They variously conjure images of icy peaks, tropical rain forests teeming with biodiversity, outposts of indigenous tribes, storm-battered plateaux, huge waterfalls, idyllic beaches, salt deserts, lost cultures, pulsating cities and sleepy mountain villages at the back of beyond. With his camera Thomas Heinze has recorded an entire continent in all its facets. Entertaining text complements his pictures to create a photographic book that memorably encapsulates the visually stunning nature of South America.

      Esterification of polysaccharides

      • 232 pages
      • 9 hours of reading

Polysaccharide esters (e. g. cellulose and starch) are among the first polymeric materials applied commercially. The way of producing these technically relevant derivatives, mainly the carboxylic acid esters of C 2 to C 4 acids, have not been changed significantly during their history of manufacture. The investigation of new acylation methods and strategies of analysis was revived during the last decade by the search for tailored, biocompatible material for specific fields of application, e. g., biotechnology, sensor technique and medicine. Unconventional solvents were developed for completely homogeneous acylation reaction applying state of the art techniques of modern organic chemistry for polysaccharide modification. This book will provide a first comprehensive summary of acylation methods in a very practical manner. Detailed structure analysis is indispensable for the evaluation of structure-property-relationships. Spectroscopic methods in particular FTIR- and NMR spectroscopy including two dimensional methods are of increasing importance.
