Liminale Anthropologien bezeichnen einen zentralen Wirkungsbereich liminaler Strukturen: den Entwurf des Menschen. Denn der Mensch ist vielfältig auf Zwischenzeiten, Schwellenphänomene und Zwischenräume bezogen, und er ist dies in einer konstitutiven, ursprünglichen, nicht nur in einer sekundären, abgeleiteten Art. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge stellen die Frage, wie Liminalität gedacht, imaginiert und dargestellt wird; sie zielen auf Konzepte, Entwürfe und Inszenierungen liminaler Anthropologien. Damit kreuzen die Beiträge zwei mittlerweile etablierte Untersuchungsperspektiven der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften: Zum einen die Frage nach kulturellen Grenzphänomenen im Allgemeinen, zum anderen die Frage nach dem Menschen unter dem Druck posthumanistischer Zustände im Besonderen.

Individual essays analyze works by notable authors such as William Shakespeare, Charlotte Brontë, Thomas Hardy, Oscar Wilde, Graham Greene, and many others, including contemporary voices like Arundhati Roy and Margaret Atwood. The collection also delves into the visual medium of film, discussing significant works like The Birth of a Nation, The Night of the Hunter, and particularly David Lynch's Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive. Additionally, it investigates the political rhetoric of figures like George W. Bush and Tony Blair, examining their strategic use of the concept of evil in discourse.
