Ignaz Semmelweis

    July 1, 1818 – August 13, 1865

This physician, known as the "savior of mothers," is recognized as an early pioneer of antiseptic procedures. His groundbreaking discovery demonstrated that the incidence of puerperal fever could be drastically reduced by implementing hand disinfection in obstetrical clinics. Despite publishing results that lowered mortality rates to below 1%, his findings contradicted prevailing medical opinions of the time and were initially rejected. His practices only gained widespread acceptance years after his death, when germ theory was confirmed, solidifying his legacy as a foundational figure in modern medical hygiene.
