Muscat, located on the south-eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, has a rich and complex history shaped by Omani tradition and external influences. The 1970s marked a significant transformation under Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, leading to Muscat's evolution from a small coastal town to a modern metropolitan area. This book chronicles Muscat's historical progression, focusing on the remarkable expansion and construction that began in the 1970s. It showcases how Muscat has maintained its unique character amidst modernization, distinguishing itself from northern cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Professor Fred Scholz, a Geography educator at Freie Universität Berlin, has dedicated decades to researching Oman, particularly Muscat, since 1970. His extensive field studies have resulted in numerous publications. This work is especially meaningful to Scholz, who has cherished Muscat since childhood, and it is dedicated to the citizens of Muscat and Oman for their support throughout his research.

This publication contains the papers presented at the symposium entitled “Oman – Germany: Cultural and Scientific Relations” held at the Free University of Berlin in June 2008. The event was part of the “Oman Cultural Week in Berlin”, organised by Oman’s Ministry of National Heritage in cooperation with the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Berlin. Oman and Germany have long enjoyed mutually beneficial contacts, and it is my sincere hope that this volume will both contribute to the readers’ knowledge and enhance their understanding of the excellent relations between the two countries.

With special reference to Baluchistan, 'Nomadism and Colonialism' documents impressively the lasting effects of dominant external colonial influence on local nomadic societies. In general terms, illustrated by specific examples, the author succeeds in showing the diversity and lasting impactof the externally induced deformation of internal structures and their importance for the development of the present time.
