Anlässlich des hundertsten Todestages von Jacob Burckhardt fand am 30. und 31. Mai 1997 ein Kolloquium an der Universität Basel statt, das die anhaltende Bedeutung des Basler Kulturhistorikers beleuchtete. Im Oktober desselben Jahres folgte ein Symposium an der Princeton University und dem Institute for Advanced Study, das die Auseinandersetzung mit Burckhardt fortsetzte.
