This two-volume co-authored study explores the history of the concept of barbarism from the eighteenth century to the present and highlights its foundational role in modern European and Western identity. It constitutes an original comparative and interdisciplinary exploration of the concept’s modern European and Western history and combines overviews with detailed analyses of representative works of literature, art, film, philosophy, and political and cultural theory. Volume 2 broaches figurations of barbarism and mobilizations of the barbarian across diverse contexts, media, and fields from the early twentieth century to our present: from avant-garde manifestoes to contemporary multilingual literature and adaptations of the Medea myth, from anti-colonial to eco-socialist texts, from political philosophy and ethno-anthropology to contemporary pop culture, from Russian poetry to Western political rhetoric, from Europe to Latin America, from cinema to art biennials, and from (neo-)Marxists to the Alt-Right.

Über Generationen hinweg hat die Habsburgermonarchie Sprache und Bildung in der multiethnischen und -kulturellen Bukowina geprägt. Hier entstand an der Grenze zum Russischen Reich 1875 eine deutschsprachige Universität und es wurden ukrainische, rumänische, deutsche, jüdische und polnische Bildungs-und Kulturvereine gegründet. Sprache und Bildung förderten den sozialen Aufstieg und das literarische Schaffen in der Region, doch zugleich begleiteten sie Nationalisierungsprozesse, waren Mittel zur Feindbildproduktion und besaßen die Qualität des Ausschlusses. Der auf eine internationale Tagung 2013 in Czernowitz (Ukraine) zurückgehende Konferenzband versammelt Beiträge ausgezeichneter Bukowina-Spezialisten, u. a. Marianne Hirsch, Leo Spitzer, Mariana Hausleitner, Kurt Scharr, David Rechter, Andrei Corbea-Hoisie, Ion Lihaciu und Peter Rychlo

Within the scope of this book, an interactive user interface (GUI) to the process--metallurgic reactor model (PRM) is to be developed. The PRM was developed and implemented by the Institute of Metallurgy at Clausthal University of Technology and is available as a C-source code. The principal purpose of this user interface is to give an understanding of the different steps of the steel production process and the "driving" of a specific virtual plant by the user. The second task is to support interactive case studies for the optimization of the model parameters and finally the overall operation of the plant. The PRM treats a specific way of steelmaking, separating this process into two steps. First, the production of raw steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF) which is implemented in the PRM as EAF07 module. Second, the alloying and transportation of the raw steel which takes place in a ladle furnace (LF) and is implemented in the PRM as LF07 module likewise.

Das Ziel des Symposiums bestand darin, Oppositionen wie „progressiver Heine - reaktionäre Romantik“ zu überprüfen und neben traditionell literaturwissenschaftlichen auch interdisziplinäre und kulturwissenschaftliche Zugänge zum Thema zu erproben. Stärker als in älteren Forschungen wird in den einzelnen Beiträgen der Akzent auf Heinrich Heines (1797-1856) skeptische Verbundenheit mit der Romantik gelegt und auf die Problematik seiner Abgrenzungsversuche. Deutlich zeichnet sich auch die Bemühung ab, dem Thema durch eine komparatistische Erweiterung des Blickfelds gerecht zu werden und die Beziehungen zwischen Heine und der Romantik als ein wechselseitiges Geben und Nehmen zu sehen.
