Once people only knew about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nowadays UNESCO counts more than 900 world heritage sites: masterpieces of human construction and overwhelming natural monuments. “Magic Places” palpably combines the natural and manmade wonders as equally valid creations of the earth. “Magic Places” allows us to experience the beauty and grandeur of important natural and manmade monuments as places which embody the powerful energies of natural and human history. Places where we step into the fascinating world of mountains, deserts, rivers and forests, into pyramids, temples, gardens, cathedrals and skyscrapers; where we can hear the stories they have to tell – for each of these places has its own myths and legends.

Mountains. Homes of the gods. Extreme habitats. The ultimate challenge for adventurers and conquerors. Places of retreat for mystics and monks. Places of yearning for romantics, walkers and admirers of nature. “The Call of the Mountains” is the title of the coming exhibition that will be opening in the Oberhausen Gasometer on 16. March 2018. It will display the variety inherent in the extraordinary world of mountains and speak about the fascination that mountains exert over people. It will enable us to comprehend the eternal cycle of rock and will use unique film extracts and photos to show visitors how massive mountain ranges containing their own flora and fauna have been created over millions of years. The exhibition will enable visitors to be a part of legendary first ascents of the most famous mountain peaks on Earth, as well as providing them with information on supreme triumphs and dramatic failures. In addition it will tell of thousands of years of traditional reverence with which people have confronted the mountains. They were genuine places of religious homage, retreats and solitary seclusion, full of myths and secrets.

„Wonders of Nature“ shows fascinating photographs. They lead us into the unique realm of plants and animals. The catalogue shows us their unusual sensory abilities, their ingenious strategies in the struggle for existence, the variety of their sexual rituals and the wealth of their social relationships. The highlight of the exhibition in the 100-metre high air space in the gasometer is a monumental sculpture of the Earth with a diameter of 20 metres onto which high-resolution moving satellite images are projected. From the astronaut's viewpoint we look at our planet and can admire in images of unique sharpness the change of times of the day and of the seasons.

Over the last millennia artists have created paintings and sculptures revealing the many various ideas of beauty in different ages and cultures. These works shows us that beauty can be radiant, harmonic, sober, gracious, elegant, precious, splendid and heroic. But it can also be unfettered, shattering, desperate, dreamlike, fantastic, playful and alluring. To accompany the exhibition „The Appearance of Beauty“ we have published an opulently illustrated book featuring texts and impressive photos of 150 of these artistic treasures which can be found in museums all over the world. A further chapter in the book is dedicated to the multimedia space event „320° Light“, created by the URBANSCREEN artists’ group. The project transforms the entire interior of the Gasometer into a huge multimedia artwork in a previously unseen and unheard fashion. Over a radius of 320 degrees viewers can marvel at fascinating graphic patterns growing and changing along the 100 metre high inner wall of the Gasometer, continually altering its shape in an interplay between reality and virtual reality.

Einzigartige großformatige Fotografien und überwältigende Filmausschnitte zeigen uns die faszinierenden schöpferischen Kräfte der Tiere und Pflanzen. Sie erzählen von ihren ungewöhnlichen sinnlichen Fähigkeiten, ihren genialen Strategien im Kampf ums Dasein, der Vielfalt ihrer sexuellen Rituale, dem Reichtum ihrer sozialen Beziehungen und ihrem Vermögen, mit anderen Arten zusammenzuleben. Höhepunkt der Ausstellung vom 11. März bis 30. Dezember 2016 im 100 Meter hohen Luftraum des Gasometers Oberhausen ist eine monumentale Skulptur der Erde, auf die bewegte hochaufgelöste Satellitenbilder unseres Planeten projiziert werden, sodass wir die Erde im Wechsel der Tages- und Jahreszeiten erleben. Dieser Katalog zur Ausstellung hält in Bild und Text alles Wichtige rund um die Ausstellung fest und gibt darüber hinaus einen historischen Abriss zum Gasometer Oberhausen und seiner diversen Ausstellungen der letzten Jahre.

Berge. Lebensraum der Extreme, Herausforderung für Abenteurer und Eroberer, Heimstätten der Götter, Zufluchtsort für Mystiker und Mönche, Sehnsuchtsort für Romantiker, für Wanderer und Bewunderer der Natur. „Der Berg ruft“ heißt der Katalog zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung im Gasometer Oberhausen, die am 16. März 2018 beginnt. Er zeigt die Vielfalt dieser außergewöhnlichen Welt und erzählt von der Faszination der Berge. Legendäre Erstbesteigungen und jahrtausendealte Ehrerbietung, großartige Triumphe, aber auch dramatische Niederlagen prägen das Verhältnis der Menschen zu Gebirgen und Gipfeln. Atemberaubende Fotografien machen diese Erfahrung und „einige der beeindruckendsten und erhabensten Lebensräume unseres Planeten erlebbar“, so der Kurator der Ausstellung, Prof. Peter Pachnicke, der damit thematisch an die Vorgängerausstellung „Wunder der Natur“ anknüpft.

In den vergangenen Jahrtausenden haben Künstler Bilder und Skulpturen geschaffen, die uns die unterschiedlichen Schönheitsvorstellungen sichtbar machen, die die Menschen der verschiedenen Epochen und Kulturen hatten. Diese Werke zeigen uns: Schönheit kann strahlend, harmonisch, schlicht, graziös, elegant, kostbar, prachtvoll, heroisch sein, aber auch entfesselt, erschütternd, verzweifelt, verträumt, phantastisch, verspielt, verführerisch. 150 diese Kunstschätze, die sich heute in verschiedenen Museen der Welt befinden, zeigt der opulent ausgestattete Bildband zur Ausstellung „Der schöne Schein“ in eindrucksvollen Fotografien. Ein weiteres Kapitel des Buch widmet sich dem multimedialen Raumerlebnis „320° Licht“, der Künstlergruppe URBANSCREEN, welches den gesamten monumentalen Innenraum des Gasometers auf bisher ungesehene und ungehörte Weise in eines der größten multimedialen Kunstwerke verwandelt. In einem Radius von 320 Grad wachsen und verändern sich auf der 100 Meter hohen Wand des Gasometers faszinierende grafische Muster, die die Form des Gasometers ständig verändern und ein Wechselspiel zwischen realem und virtuellem Raumerleben erzeugen.
