Jacques-Yves Cousteau

Jacques-Yves Cousteau

June 11, 1910 – June 25, 1997

Jacques Cousteau was a naval officer, explorer, ecologist, and filmmaker whose life's work was dedicated to studying the sea. Though most famously known for his television programs, he also co-developed the aqua-lung and pioneered marine conservation as a political and scientific priority. Aboard the Calypso, Cousteau explored the planet's most fascinating waters, producing numerous books and films during his voyages. He referred to himself as an "oceanographic technician," but was truly a sophisticated nature lover who found a way to communicate complex scientific and biological concepts to ordinary people. His work enabled many to explore the resources of the "blue continent" and significantly popularized knowledge of underwater biology.
