Schmid shows how reception processes work across linguistic, national, and cultural boundaries, taking the English Romantic poet Shelley's German reception as a case study. It also highlights Anglo-German literary and cultural relations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and supplies a theoretical framework for further analysis.
Die Konzepte von Einsamkeit und Geselligkeit, zentral für den intellektuellen Austausch um 1800, manifestieren sich in literarischen wie nicht-literarischen Texten. Geselligkeit ist der Kontrapunkt zur Einsamkeitsmode, die sich ab Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts vor allem unter Rousseaus Einfluss verbreitete. Paradoxerweise ist die Zeit um 1800 ebenso vom Kult der Einsamkeit wie von der Praxis der Geselligkeit geprägt. Letztere wurde oft von Frauen veranlasst, wie Texte um Staëls Reisen, Blessingtons Londoner Salons, die Politisierung der Privatsphäre im amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg oder die ländliche Geselligkeit in Brandenburg-Preußen zeigen. Auch fungierten durch Korrespondenz geschaffene Gelehrtennetzwerke und literarische Zeitschriften als Träger von Geselligkeit. Dem Postulat nach gelungenem Miteinander standen einsame „Helden“ wie Goethes Werther gegenüber; das Ausstellen von Melancholie in der Musik hatte Konjunktur. Der vorliegende Band vereint die Beiträge einer Regensburger Tagung (2007), an der Vertreter der Germanistik, Anglistik, Amerikanistik, Romanistik, Musikwissenschaft, Geschichtswissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte und Komparatistik teilnahmen.
