Diese Frage wird anhand linguistischer Semantiktheorien, der Metalexikographie und Definitionstheorie sowie ausführlicher empirischer Untersuchungen von Wörterbuchdaten diskutiert. Der Autor untersucht im Rahmen einer prozeduralen Semantikkonzeption, wie aus diesen Daten Informationen werden können. Es wird deutlich, welche fundamentalen Unterschiede (noch?) zwischen menschlicher Sprachverarbeitung und sie simulierenden künstlichen Informationssystemen bestehen. Das Buch ist ein Plädoyer, aus der Perspektive der (Computer)linguistik, für eine Abkehr von statischen Bedeutungskonzepten und eine Orientierung an veränderten Grundvorstellungen in Theorien und Anwendungen der Sprachverarbeitung mit Computern.
