The Portable Walt Whitman
- 688 pages
- 25 hours of reading
When Walt Whitman self-published Leaves of Grass in 1855 it was a slim volume of twelve poems and he was a journalist and poet from Long Island, little-known but full of ambition and poetic fire. To give a new voice to the new nation shaken by civil war, he spent his entire life revising and adding to the work, but his initial act of bravado in answering Ralph Waldo Emerson's call for a national poet has made Whitman the quintessential American writer. This rich cross-section of his work includes poems from throughout Whitman's lifetime as published on his deathbed edition of 1891 and other works.
Live Oak, with Moss
- 192 pages
- 7 hours of reading
As he was turning forty, Walt Whitman wrote twelve poems in a small handmade book he entitled "Live Oak, With Moss." The poems were intensely private reflections on his attraction to and affection for other men. They were also Whitman's most adventurous explorations of the theme of same-sex love, composed decades before the word "homosexual" came into use. This revolutionary, extraordinarily beautiful and passionate cluster of poems was never published by Whitman and has remained unknown to the general public--until now. New York Times bestselling and Caldecott Award-winning illustrator Brian Selznick offers a provocative visual narrative of "Live Oak, With Moss," and Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener reconstructs the story of the poetic cluster's creation and destruction. Walt Whitman's reassembled, reinterpreted Live Oak, With Moss serves as a source of inspiration and a cause for celebration.

“I am large, I contain multitudes” A Penguin Classic When Walt Whitman self-published his Leaves of Grass in July 1855, he altered the course of literary history. One of the greatest masterpieces of American literature, it redefined the rules of poetry while describing the soul of the American character. Throughout his great career, Whitman continuously revised, expanded, and republished Leaves of Grass, but many critics believe that the book that matters most is the 1855 original. Penguin Classics proudly presents that text in its original and complete form, with an introductory essay by the writer and poet Malcolm Cowley. “I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.” For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
The Million Dead, Too, Summ'd Up: Walt Whitman's Civil War Writings
- 240 pages
- 9 hours of reading
This book is the first to offer a comprehensive selection of Walt Whitman’s Civil War poetry and prose with a full commentary on each work. Ed Folsom and Christopher Merrill carry on a dialogue with Whitman (and with each other) as they invite readers to trace how Whitman’s writing about the Civil War develops, shifts, and manifests itself in different genres throughout the years of the war. The book offers forty selections of Whitman’s war writings, including not only the well-known war poems but also his prose and personal letters. Each are followed by Folsom’s critical examination and then by Merrill’s afterword, suggesting broader contexts for thinking about the selection. The real democratic reader, Whitman said, “must himself or herself construct indeed the poem, argument, history, metaphysical essay—the text furnishing the hints, the clue, the start or frame-work,” because what is needed for democracy to flourish is “a nation of supple and athletic minds.” Folsom and Merrill model this kind of active reading and encourage both seasoned and new readers of Whitman’s war writings to enter into the challenging and exhilarating mode of talking back to Whitman, arguing with him, and learning from him.
This collection contains the poetic works of Walt Whitman. These poems reflect the vitality of a new nation and the vastness of its lands. They combine autobiographical, sociological and religious themes but did not conform to previous genres.

This is probably the most notable of all regional books about New York and Long Island. It is the work of Walt Whitman, and its pages reveal the serious professional journalist, and not seldom the poet, writing brave things in prose. The editor comments in his introduction, "Whitman, though a native of the New York area, loved it and wrote of it with the zeal and zest usually found only in those from elsewhere who have made New York their chosen home." Indeed, he lived in the region for the first forty-two years of his life; successfuly edited newspapers in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Long Island; and wrote for many years following. The articles collected in this volume by Henry M. Christman were conceived as a book by their author but appeared in a series entitled "Brooklyniana" that appeared in the Brooklyn Standard . All bear the impress of Whitman's humanity and show the breadth of his interest in "the great play of life and business going on around us."
In a series of thirteen newspaper installments, written in 1858 under the pseudonym Mose Velsor, American poet Walt Whitman, adopted the role of advice columnist and dispensed tips on men's health. Includes poetry and Victorian line drawings.
Engaging deeply with the American Civil War, this collection of poems captures both the emotional and physical toll of conflict. Whitman celebrates the resilience and spirit of the American people, offering an affirmative and poignant reflection on the experiences of war. Published in the mid-19th century, the work stands as a testament to the era's struggles and triumphs.
"For I believe that climate does thus react on man — as there is something in the mountain air that feeds the spirit and inspires. Henry David Thoreau's Walking began as a lecture in 1851 and ultimately appeared in The Atlantic Monthly in 1862, shortly after the author's death. The impassioned essay, which praises the merits of time spent in nature, has become one of the most influential works of the modern environmentalist movement. Thoreau's view of walking in nature as a self-reflective activity invites readers to embark on their own ramble in order to gain a "wild and dusky" self-knowledge unattainable elsewhere. Americans felt the pressures of a changing world even in the relatively slow-paced 1800s, and Thoreau proposed balancing social stress with unhurried wanderings in fields and woods. His writings, from Civil Disobedience to Walden, remain popular because of their enduring relevance, and Walking bears a special resonance for modern readers who may have become disconnected from the natural world.

Invisible World: Fifty Tiny Poems by Walt Whitman
- 72 pages
- 3 hours of reading
When presented in selected or collected editions, Whitman’s tiny poems most often get lost on the page, folded in and camouflaged by the longer poems, or crowded—two or three or four per page— as a space-and-paper-saving device (I’ve always believed that the broadside is the best medium for one poem on one page, allowing the poem breathing room, its full accord, and our full attention). Our hope with Invisible World is to gather a sampler of Whitman’s small poems without the visual distraction of the longer poems—to set aside, for the time being, the familiar and signature long poems of Whitman—in order to offer some of his tiny poems room of their own to breathe on the page, to escape the claustrophobia of the book, and allow them to luxuriate in the white space that surrounds them, so that each poem stands alone for a brief moment and garners the reader’s full attention.

Kniha Listy trávy je první český překlad původního vydání Leaves of Grass (1855) Walta Whitmana. Silně humanistický a všeobjímající Whitmanův étos vstupuje v době narůstající xenofobie do nových souvislostí. Současný překlad amerikanisty a písňového folkloristy Ondřeje Skovajsy a spisovatelky a muzikantky Hany Lundiakové hledá adekvátní protějšek k Whitmanovu hlasu. Snaží se zachytit lahodnost svobody a rozkoš existence. Dnes už netřeba cenzurovat spermaticky uvolněné Whitmanovy zpěvy a živelný křik, je třeba je spíše zdůraznit. Jako horizont, odkud jsme vyšli a kam směřujeme.
Nový výbor z jediné, ale rozsáhlé Whitmanovy sbírky (396 básní), kterou autor postupně vydal v sedmi edicích, přičemž do každé z nich byly přidány další nové básně. Básně v tomto výboru byly přeloženy z Complete Poetry & Selected Prose and Letters.

Nazváno podle sbírky básní Walt Whitmana "Leaves of Grass" Výbor z básní a próz klasika americké literatury W. Whitmana (1819-1892). Whitman chtěl vytvořit ve svých Stéblech trávy píseň prostých lidí a jejich denní práce, píseň vesmírného demokratického soudružství. Jeho průkopnickédílo básnické, psané většinou volným veršem, rozšířilo nesmírně obzory poesie a zároveň demokratisovalo její thematiku. I když je ideologicky nejednotná a má umělecky nestejnou hodnotu, je Whitmanova poesie stále živá a také nám má co říci. Kypí v ní mládí světa a vře oheň jarých sil.
