The book contains a selection of articles on areal, historical and typological aspects of the South Siberian Turkic language group, written by linguists from Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Turkey and the United States. Beside dealing with South Siberian Turkic languages (Altay Turkic, Tuvan, Shor, Khakas), the volume also presents papers on Tuvan varieties spoken in Mongolia and China and on Yellow Uyghur, a language spoken in the Qinghăi-Gansù region of China which appears to be genetically close to South Siberian Turkic. Kazakh, a contact language to several of these idioms, is also discussed. The papers cover the typology of the sound, morphological and syntactic systems as well as the areal features and the historical development of these languages.

Botanica und Zoologica in der türkischen Welt, Festschrift für Ingeborg Hauenschild, befasst sich mit Pflanzen- und Tierbezeichnungen in der Turcia. Sowohl ältere Sprachstufen (u. a. die alttürkischen Runeninschriften, Altuigurisch und Osmanisch) werden verzeichnet als auch heute in China, in der Mongolei oder im Kaukasusraum gesprochene Varianten – die meisten von diesen bedroht und unzulänglich dokumentiert. Ebenso wird auf die Sprachpolitik der jungen Türkischen Republik mit Bezug auf die Wortschöpfung eingegangen. Obwohl der Schwerpunkt des Bands (gemäß dem Werk der hochgeschätzten Jubilarin) auf der Lexik liegt, enthält er auch wichtige Beiträge zur Grammatik der besprochenen Sprachen und bietet interessante Einblicke in literarische Werke, wie etwa das Lehrgedicht eines Gärtners oder die zypriotische Volkspoesie.

The papers brought together in the present volume deal with grammatical, lexical, onomastic and historical issues of non-Muslim Turkic languages and dialects spoken in South Siberia, in Mongolia and in China, and with the areal and genetic relationships between them. All of these varieties are socially dominated by non-Turkic languages; many of them are acutely endangered and, in general, insufficiently described. A number of the articles deal with the oral traditions (i. e. epics, proverbs) of the peoples speaking these varieties. Some typological issues concerning the Turkic languages of the area are also touched upon.
