William Lewis Herndon Books

William Lewis Herndon led a United States expedition to the Valley of the Amazon in 1851. He died as the commander of the Atlantic Mail Steamship Company steamer SS Central America during a hurricane, going down with his ship. His brother erected the Herndon Memorial on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
