This book explores the historial role of the Balkan Wars. In Eastern Europe, the two Balkan Wars of 1912/13 had greater importance than the First World War for the construction of nations and states. This volume shows how these “short” wars profoundly changed the sociopolitical situation in the Balkans, with consequences that are still felt today. More than one hundred years later, the successors of the belligerent states in Southeastern Europe memorialize the wars as heroic highlights of their respective pasts. Furthermore, the metaphor that the Balkans were Europe’s “powder keg”, perpetuated at the beginning of the twentieth century in the face of these wars, was reactivated in both the West and the East up through the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. The authors entangle the hitherto exclusive national master narratives and analyse them cogently and trenchantly for an international readership. They make an indispensable contribution to the proper integration of the Balkan Wars into the European historical memory of twentieth-century warfare.

Ein internationales Autorenteam widmet sich relevanten Fragen zu Staatsbürgerschaft im östlichen Europa. Ausgehend von der These, dass in der Moderne zivile, politische und soziale Rechte das Verhältnis des Staates zu seinen Bürgern bestimmen, fragtes in historischer, ökonomischer und juristischer Perspektive nach der Ausgestaltung dieses Verhältnisses in verschiedenen Kontexten. Der Blick richtet sich besonders auf die spezifischen Entwicklungen in der Region. Im Zentrum stehen Institutionen und Kontinuitäten, koethnische Bevölkerungsgruppen im Ausland, Minderheitenstatus und universale Rechte, Staatsverfall und Staatsgründungen, Dissoziation und Reintegration sowie Sozialökonomische Partizipation und Arbeitsrecht.

Comparativ. Zeitschrift für Globalgeschichte und vergleichende Gesellschaftsforschung rückt Themen einer innovativen Weltgeschichte in den Fokus und analysiert historische und aktuelle Globalisierungsvorgänge. Unterschiede und Ähnlichkeiten sowie Interaktions-, Kooperations- und Transferprozesse werden in ihrem zeitlichen Wandel und im Hinblick auf die Bedeutung und Funktion für die Verräumlichung und Enträumlichung sozialer, kultureller, politischer, wirtschaftlicher und rechtlicher Ordnungen diskutiert. Comparativ veröffentlicht Beiträge in deutscher, englischer und französischer Sprache. Die Zeitschrift ist das Kommunikationsforum des European Network in Universal and Global History und erörtert deshalb europäische Perspektive auf Globalisierung und europäischen Entwicklungen in weltweiten Zusammenhängen besonders intensiv.
