This monograph stems from the 4th International Austrian-Israeli Technion Symposium and Industrial Forum, held in Vienna from April 23-25, 2001, focusing on the Preservation of Water Resources. Organized in collaboration with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Science and Culture, and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economy and Labor, the event featured a program managed by a joint Committee of editors from the Stephan and Nancy Grand Water Research Institute at the Technion and the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna. The Symposium attracted participants from universities, research institutes, industries, and national authorities across multiple countries, including Austria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, and the USA. The topics discussed were of significant international relevance, with presentations delivered at a high professional standard. In response to the Symposium Program Committee's initiative, manuscripts of exceptional quality were expanded into chapters for this monograph, which shares the Symposium's title. Out of 39 papers presented, 24 were selected based on scientific merit and contribution, and these were further expanded and peer-reviewed for inclusion in this Volume.

The book explores fundamental fluid principles and their applications across various environmental contexts, including surface, underground, and oceanic fluid motions. It emphasizes the use of physical and numerical models alongside modern computational techniques to analyze environmental processes. Key topics include scaling methods for environmental challenges, boundary layer motion equations, sediment and contaminant transport in water bodies, mixed layer modeling, and air/water interface transport processes, providing a comprehensive resource for understanding environmental fluid mechanics.

The Water Research Institute at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) initiated and sponsored the International Workshop on "Soil and Aquifer Pollution: Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids - Contamination and Reclamation," held from May 13th-15th, 1996, at the Technion campus in Haifa. Groundwater contamination is a critical issue for Israel and other nations reliant on groundwater for their water supply, with 60% of Israel's water sourced from this resource, primarily from two major aquifers. The Coastal Aquifer, located beneath a densely populated area, is particularly vulnerable to surface pollution. In contrast, the Mountain Aquifer, which is recharged from higher terrain, flows westward and is more susceptible to contamination due to its higher permeabilities and flow velocities. Smaller local aquifers also play a vital role in the national water system. Despite protective measures, some aquifers have already experienced contamination, and accidental pollution remains a risk. Understanding groundwater contamination processes, recommending preventive measures, and identifying effective reclamation strategies are essential. Non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) represent some of the most significant contaminants, highlighting the need for ongoing research and action in this area.
