Following successful workshops in St. Andrews and Pisa, the 3rd European Workshop on Software Architecture took place in Nantes, France, on September 4–5, 2006. This event served as an international forum for researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to present innovative research and discuss a variety of topics within software architecture. As a crucial subdiscipline of software engineering, software architecture encompasses a wide range of languages, styles, models, tools, and processes. Its significance in the engineering of software-intensive systems has grown, particularly for dynamic, adaptive, autonomic, and mobile applications. The workshop emphasized formalisms, technologies, and processes for describing, verifying, validating, refining, building, and evolving software systems, with a focus on component and service-oriented architectures. Topics covered included architecture modeling, architectural aspects, analysis, transformation, synthesis, quality attributes, model-driven engineering, and architecture-based support for assembling components and developing service-oriented systems. EWSA 2006 distinguished between research papers, which detail novel research work, and position papers, which articulate concise arguments regarding software architecture research or practice.
