Bei der Untersuchung der Funktionen von Erzählungen wird deutlich, dass ein faszinierendes Problem die Differenz zwischen Erzählungen mit Wahrheitsanspruch und solchen, die ihre Fiktionalität offenbaren, betrifft. Zudem wird erforscht, wie Faktuales und Fiktives sich überschneiden und gegenseitig spiegeln. Dies ist sowohl auf der Ebene des Erzählten als auch des Erzähltextes komplex. Die Zugangsweisen der verschiedenen Disziplinen variieren: Die Literaturwissenschaft entwickelt Theorien der Fiktionalität, während die Psychologie Identitäts- und Selbstkonstruktionen durch Erzählungen analysiert. Geschichtswissenschaft und Ethik befassen sich mit den Fragen von Wahrheit und Fiktion. Aktuelle Studien zu Film und anderen Medien reflektieren einen Zeitgeist, der die Unterscheidung zwischen Fiktionalität und Faktualität zunehmend aufhebt. Das Graduiertenkolleg 1767, gefördert von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, widmet sich seit 2012 diesen Interferenzen und Differenzen von faktualen und fiktionalen Erzählungen. Der erste Band der Buchreihe bietet einen Überblick über interdisziplinäre Ansätze zu Faktualität und Fiktionalität aus Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften, Theologie, Philosophie, Psychologie, Geschichtswissenschaft und Unternehmensberatung.

The book offers an in-depth examination of free indirect discourse within the framework of narrative theory, focusing on the representation of speech and thought in fiction. Through her analysis, Fludernik introduces a fresh set of questions that challenge existing perspectives in narrative studies, encouraging readers to rethink how narratives convey characters' inner experiences and voices.

This study is the first monograph on the contemporary British novelist and playwright Gabriel Josipovici (1940- ), author of fourteen novels and several dozens of short stories, some thirty plays for radio and the stage, and of a considerable oeuvre in literary criticism. Gabriel Josipovici, also known as a reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement , is now one of the foremost British writers who continue the tradition of Modernism. Josipovici also figures among the most prominent Jewish authors writing in the UK today. This study includes an interview with the author and presents an overview of Josipovici’s creative oeuvre. Close readings of a selection of short stories, novels, plays and radio plays are followed by an attempt to place Josipovici on the map of present-day British literature.
