French author Marie de Gournay explored the equality of men and women in her early writings. Emerging in the early 17th century, these proto-feminist works anticipated many themes that would later be developed. She also penned a novel and various other literary compositions.

During her lifetime Marie de Gournay was celebrated as one of the seventy most famous women of all time. This volume presents translations of four of Gournay's works that address feminist issues. This volume includes previously unpublished work.
