In Fathom 39 portrait photographs are reproduced on full-page plates. It is Bernhard Fuchs' second series of portraits and, like all of his other series to date, was several years in the making.We see people, photographed in the existent light of interior spaces, who handle the unspoken dialogue with the photographer in an enquiring manner. Time and again on walks in the area around Helfenberg I have been confronted withthe continuous changes happening to the small farms there. Remotely locatedin the hilly landscape of the Mühhlviertel, these are mainly mixed-farming operations, something that is reflected in the architecture of the buildings and the forms of theadjacent plots. The climate is bleak, the soils rather meagre. Arable fields, woodlandand grassland for the grazing of livestock, mostly dairy cows, are characteristic of thearea. Most of the farms are run as secondary sources of income and are passed downfrom generation to generation. However, structural changes have also taken their tollhere: new laws require that stalls and keeping conditions be reorganised, the cost ofnecessary investment is rising and farmers often struggle to find successors to takeover their farms. As such, many of these small farms have been abandoned inrecent times.

Das Buch im Großformat gibt den Fotografien scheinbar den Charakter allgemeiner Bildtafeln, beim genauen Blick geben sie sich jedoch als sensible Aufnahmen alltäglicher Situationen und als individuelle Porträts der abgebildeten Autos zu erkennen. „Auf meinen Radtouren sah ich immer wieder PKW’s, Busse und LKW’s, die einfach nur in der Gegend standen. Ich glaube, meine erste Reaktion war, nach dem abwesenden Besitzer Ausschau zu halten. Da ich aber meistens keinen Menschen sah, blieb ich mit der Situation alleine und es entwickelte sich auf einmal eine Beziehung zu diesen Fahrzeugen, wie ich es nicht erwartet hatte. Die Autos in der Landschaft hatten eine Wirkung auf mich, wie die von Schauspielern auf einer Bühne, und ich fing ab da ihren Witz und ihre Tragödie zu interpretieren und zu sammeln an.“
