Seit dem Ende des Booms und der als „Asienkrise“ bekannt gewordenen schweren Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise Ende der 1990er Jahre treten gewaltsame Konflikte auch in Südostasien wieder verstärkt ins Bewusstsein der Öffentlichkeit. Zur wirtschaftlichen Krise gesellen sich längst politische und gesellschaftliche Krisen in den Ländern der Region, und alte Konflikte – jahrelang durch das positive Bild der Wachstumsregion überdeckt – treten zunehmend wieder in Erscheinung. Am Beispiel gewaltsamer Konflikte in Indonesien, Thailand, den Philippinen und den Salomonen diskutiert der Band die vielfältigen ökonomisch begründeten Interessenkonflikte als Grundstruktur gewaltsamer Auseinandersetzungen in der Region und zeigt dabei die strukturellen Beziehungen zwischen „alten“ Konfliktlinien und „neuen“ Kriegen im pazifischen Raum auf. Der Band richtet seinen Blick auch auf die mögliche „Nachkriegsordnung“, vor allem aber auf die Frage nach dem gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit den leidvollen Erfahrungen aus langjährigen Gewaltkonflikten. Am Beispiel von Kambodscha und Osttimor werden Erfahrungen im gesellschaftspolitischen Umgang mit weit reichenden Gewalterfahrungen vorgestellt und diskutiert.
The enormous leaps of growth and development experienced by Eastern and Southeast Asian states since the 1960s on account of their astonishing industrial development have led to concerns that a resulting global economic and political shift might favour the 'Pacific region' at the expense of the 'Atlantic region'. A 'Pacific century' was proclaimed, in which it was predicted that Asian-Pacific countries would outpace the traditional leading powers of the West. A more careful look quickly reveals that this view is too simplistic. From the point of view of various disciplines and covering different nations like China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea the authors of this publication pursue the question whether the 21st century can already be labelled the 'Pacific Century'. This was also the title of the interdisciplinary series of lectures held at the University of Göttingen/Germany in the winter semester 2003/2004. This series of lectures was jointly organized by the Department of Geography, the University of Göttingen and the Association of Pacific Studies e. V. (APSA). This 10th volume of the publication series 'Pazifik Forum' contains contributions by W. Kreisel, M. Taube & Ka-Wai Yiu, M. Waibel, A. Croissant, B. Dahm, H. Schneider, R. Seib and R. Jordan.
Dieser Band stellt die Herausforderungen und Probleme des Inseltourismus vor dem Hintergrund der Nachhaltigkeit und der Partizipation indigener Kulturen dar. Überaus wichtig ist dabei eine interdisziplinäre Betrachtungsweise, was sich in unterschiedlichen akademischen Fachrichtungen der Autoren niederschlägt. Im vorliegenden Band finden sich neben Untersuchungen über Inseln der pazifischen Inselwelt wie Fiji, Französisch-Polynesien oder Rapa Nui solche über Inseln im Indischen Ozean wie die Malediven, Seychellen oder Nikobaren und Andamanen sowie über Inseln des südchinesischen Meers, der Karibik und des Mittelmeers. Die Tsunami-Flutkatastrophe vom 26.12.2004 mit insgesamt über 300.000 Toten hat deutlich gemacht, wie fragil insbesondere Inseln sind. Aufgrund der großen Zahl internationaler Touristen in den Ferienparadiesen Süd- und Südostasiens hat noch keine andere Naturkatastrophe bislang so viele Opfer aus so vielen verschiedenen Kontinenten und Ländern gefordert.
